Being a Pro Intercessor

Well as I have discussed in previous entries, we have this thing we do here called intercession. And well this is kind of a big thing here, and we do it about 3 hours a week. So needless to say when I get invovled in something I like to be good at it. Well, let's just say I'm not very good at this but I'm trying. The other day I was walking out of one of our intercession meetings with Marc (a guy in our class) and he's like, "I think I"m spiritually deaf," and I was like buddy I know what you mean. When you're put in a group and pray, and are suppose to be hearing from God, when you don't man do you feel like a loser. So the other day in intercession, I was sitting there quietly waiting and hoping for just something, anything. And well something popped into my head, and I went ahead and looked into the Bible at the verse that came, and was like what that has nothing to do with anything. So I just put it aside, but the guys in my group were very encouraging and had me share anyway. Let's just say at the end of the session one of the guys comes up to me and says, "Dana I feel as though the Lord is telling me that you would be a great intercessor." And I was like, (in my head of course) are you joking me buddy, I don't even hear from Him. He's like, "really I think because of your humility, that God is going to use you, so check out this book." So he gave me a name to this book and walked off. CRAZY!!
So today we had intercession again, and like I wrote in yesterday's blog I have been struggling with patience. I wrote also that God gave me the Proverb to help me through it, but I needed to gain wisdom and fast. In intercession though today, I believe God gave me another verse, it was 1 Corinthians 2:13-14. Paraphrasing it says something about how wisdom comes not from man, but from the Lord and the Holy Spirit. So yeah, um hello!!!! Needless to say I gave it up to the Lord, and can only hope that through Him I will get through my struggles of patience.

Dana,
The intercession thing can be interesting to figure out especially with a sort of 'pressure' from others in the moment. The reality of the matter is this...
You pray at the beginning asking God to lead you...then, you just pray what whatever you want. Quite literally. We can never say with 100% certainty that God 'spoke' to us so don't feel bad if you don't hear some audible voice or even a strong inner voice-type thing. God leads us and guides us in a few key ways. First, the bible. Then the holy spirit leads our hearts and minds but always in connection to biblical truth. This is why a lot of people will use the scriptures as they pray.
Anyway, I have been where you are and felt that awkwardness. In short, don't think that that you have to overspiritualize intercession. If I am thinking or reading about Mexico and see that they are really, really poor I ask that God would provide for them and fully believe (in faith) that the holy spirit led me to pray that particular thing. Remember, you can't really mess up intercession if your motives are right...it isn't more holy or spiritual to say 'God told me this or that.'
Thinking of you and praying for you,
Lance
